The flamingos at Flamingo Gardens are a great attraction; however, there is much more to enjoy at this lovely oasis. One should take a tram ride around the property at some point during his or her visit. Our driver and guide was very knowledgeable. The grounds are just beautiful and there is more to see than one realizes. A variety of birds live at Flamingo Gardens in different areas. Peaco*cks stroll around and sit on the branches of a massive tree. There are playful otters in a fun playground-type habitat, a black bear, cats, turtles, alligators, and birds of prey. This is a great place for families to spend part of a day and enjoy nature.

I have long wanted to visit this nature center but when I am in the area I tend to go to Flamingo Gardens which is across the street from it. I finally got a chance during my vacation and I had to do my visit in between rain storms. I don't know what took me so long because I thoroughly enjoyed the 164.8 that make up one of Broward's largest natural areas. You park in the lot and then take a path to the visitor's center. Inside the center you can visit the exhibit hall that included an excellent display detailing the Native American presence in this area by the Tequesta and Seminole. While I enjoyed the exhibit I did note that their artifacts were reproductions and not authentic artifacts. There was still a lot of good information though. In the center you can get park information, visit the playroom for children, or see some live animals in their display. On my visit there they were hosting a student photography exhibit. Oak Hammock Hall is available for rental for weddings and other special events. Behind the visitors centers are rocking chairs on the porch. Perfect for taking in the gorgeous marsh view that had birds and turtles. An elevated boardwalk takes you across the marsh and to a half mile nature trail that goes through the oak hammock. Foxes and bobcats make their home here along with migratory and resident birds but all I saw on my visit where a few Zebra Longwing butterflies. Located in the back is a Garden of Reflection that stands in tribute to crime victims. A 90 minute ceremony is held here once a year.On your way out don't forget to stop by the public art installation, Island Garden by Lorna Jordan. It is a metal gazebo that spirals up to benches and framed on both sides by a water feature. I really loved it and it was the perfect place to sit and relax after the trail hike. The art in this piece incorporates nature into it. I really enjoyed my visit even though it was in the pouring rain. The next time I visit Flamingo Gardens I will be incorporating a visit here as well. While Flamingo Gardens displays their animals in enclosures here you can see them the wild and experience how Florida used to be.
