The Internet has become a popular means of communication and emails gradually took over telephone calls and letters. Now, as mobiles become a necessity in today’s modern world, emails and letters have become a thing of the past. Today, most people prefer to either make a phone call to reach a friend or family member, or they would rather send a text message just to stay in touch.

A recent survey shows that the number of text messages sent every day in the United States has increased considerably as compared to making telephone calls. According to the survey, SMS messages are becoming more and more popular among people as compared to telephone calls. An alarming thing is that the highest number of text messages on average is sent by teenagers between the age of 13 – 17. A recent survey carried out in the United States shows that kids below the age of 12 send 428 mobile phone messages on average per month. Teenagers from the age of 13 – 17 send an average of 1,724 per month. The number starts decreasing with age, with 790 average λŒ€λŸ‰λ¬Έμž text messages sent by people in the age group of 18 – 24. People in the age of 25 – 34 send an average of 331 messages every month, whereas those in the age range of 35 – 44 send 236 on average per person, per month. People between the ages 45 – 54 send 128 messages on average per month, which makes an average of 4 messages per day, per person. Adults in the age range of 55 – 64 send 38 text messages on a monthly basis, which makes around 1 text message per day. The last age group of people between the ages 65 to 99 send a total of only 14 text messages every month, which makes only 1 message after every 2 days.

The number of phone calls made by these age groups is drastically lower than the number of text messages sent by these age groups. For example, age people between the age groups 12 and under make 137 telephone calls on average per month. Those between the ages 13 – 17 make 231 telephone calls as compared to 1,742 text messages on average per month. The next age group bracket of 18 – 24 make 265 phone calls every month while people between the ages 25 – 34 make 239 calls per month, per person. As the age group increases, people prefer to make phone calls rather than use text messages as a means of communication. Ages 35 – 44 make 233 calls on average as opposed to 236 text messages. Furthermore, those in the age group of 45 – 54 make 193 telephone calls per month, against 128 text messages. Elderly people in the ages 55 – 64 make 145 telephone calls on average as compared to only 38 text messages in a month. The last age group for 65+ make 99 telephone calls per month on average only.
